ORIGINAL SHARPS 1874 .45-70 BUSINESS MODEL WITH SHARPS LETTER, SHIPPED SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, 1878
Description: ORIGINAL SHARPS 1874 .45-70 BUSINESS MODEL WITH SHARPS LETTER, #161XXX, SHIPPED TO SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA MAY 18 1878. The 1874 Sharps Business rifle was their "no-frills" hard working sporting rifle. Most had 28" fairly heavy tapered round barrels with the standard calibers being .45-70 (.45 2 1/10" case) and .40-70. They typically had slightly curved military butt plates, double set triggers and a rounded forend tip. This example has a matching serial number on the barrel and receiver (many seem to be mismatched). It has the standard Lawrence marked/patented ladder rear sight with slide intact mated with a small blade front sight. All Sharps barrel markings are sharp and clear as are the receiver markings. The rear of the barrel top just ahead of the receiver is correctly marked "BUSINESS 45" indicating both model and caliber. The receiver has aged to a silver/brown and the barrel blue is thinned and mixing heavily gray and brown. The stock and forend are solid with no chips or cracks and tight wood to metal fit around the receiver. The double set triggers function properly and the bore is surprisingly bright with sharp rifling throughout and any pitting scattered, surface and minor. The Sharps letter (which I sent for in 2015) further states that this rifle was invoiced to Edward G. Westcott, in care of N. Curry & Bro. gun and sporting goods dealers of San Francisco, California. "The order to the Curry firm was evidently entered by Sharps Vice President & Treasurer Edward G. Westcott while on a trip to the West Coast." The order containing this rifle also included other Business Rifles in both .40 and .45 caliber as well as a number of Hunter's rifles and Military rifles- all Model 1874s- along with ammo etc Only 1,604 Business models were made in all calibers etc. and being a "working rifle" in the 1874 line, most found today are in very hard used and often abused condition. This is a particularly nice example of a fairly early Business Model that surely had adventures in the Western Frontier! Unaltered, matching examples in .desirable 45-70 caliber with western shipped documentation don't come up for sale frequently.
