Custom Savage 99 284
Description:

This is a very nice Savage 99 in the 284 Winchester cartridge.
t follows the 99F pattern with no high comb on the buttstock like a 99DL would have, and has the wrap around forearm checkering. Checkering is clean and nice. Condition of the entire firearm is nearly perfect and very pleasing in appearance with it's gorgeous soft wood tone and finish. It is factory drilled and tapped for standard Savage 99 scope mounts and has the tang safety found on post 1960 rifles. Bore is outstanding with deep sharp rifling. Overall finish on this rifle is very very nice. Cartridges cycle through the action like butter, flawlessly with no hangups.
The 99F 284 forearm is unique in the 99F line in that it has no raised barrel boss cutout like all the other 99F barrels, and this forearm is consistent with that .284 feature which therefore leads me to believe it is an original 99F 284 forearm. Also unique to the .284 99 is the rotory magazine carries 4 rather than 5, this one carries 4, and the 284 rotor is usually held in place with a c-clip rather than the cross receiver screw used with all other cartridges. This receiver has both the cross screw of all the other 99F's, and the c-clip which requires factory machining inside the receiver to accomodate it.
With the factory 284 forearm and factory machining for the c-clip rotor retainer, it makes me wonder if this wasn't some sort of early prototype put together by Savage. No way to know for sure but it clearly has 99F .284 specific features that would be hard to add later.
The serial number places the receiver date at 1963 which would be in the development period for 99's in 284 at Savage. I don't think it can be known when exactly the rifle was built but either way Savage or custom it is special.
Condition is outstanding with matte finish blue and wood. It has only very small marks anywhere. Hard to imagine a more beautiful example of a Savage 99 in .284.
