Sako A II Deluxe Bolt Action Rifle 243 Win 23” Blued with Leupold VX-3L 3.5-10x50mm scope
Description: In 1957 Sako introduced the L-579 as their standard medium-action rifle for cartridges like the .22-250 Remington, .243 Winchester, 244 Remington, and the .308 Winchester. It was essentially a Mauser Model 98 with some modifications. Sako used the L-579 action until 1972. After 1972, Sako produced essentially the same rifle with a few modifications as the A-II (or A-2). The rifle shown here, imported by Stoeger, is likely to be a Deluxe model, given all the special features. It sports a checkered Monte-Carlo wood stock with contrasting pistol grip cap and fore end tip (i.e. the tip does NOT match the pistol grip cap), brown recoil pad (Sako marked), blued receiver and barrel, and an engraved floor plate (featuring the head of a Springbok, a type of antelope that lives in the South and Southwestern parts of Africa). The bluing is in superb shape while the finish on the Leupold scope rings closely matching the rest of the metal. There is, however, a small spot of rust on the left-hand side of the rear scope ring. The stock is very fine shape with little evidence of wear to the finish. The rifle is equipped with a Leupold VX-3L 3.5-10x50mm scope. The VX-3L features an interesting objective bell of which the shape of the housing and glass is concave, i.e. it bends upwards. This is a very ingenious way of getting the scope closer to the axis of the bore, which increases the inherent accuracy of the rifle/scope setup. The bore is in pristine shape with no rust or pitting visible. This example of the A-II is chambered for the famous .243 Winchester cartridge. The .243 was originally developed as a versatile “short action” cartridge to hunt both medium game and small game alike. Upon its initial release back in 1955, the .243 quickly took whitetail hunting by storm, and it remains one of the most popular whitetail deer cartridges, though its popularity has been challenged in recent years by the 6.5 Creedmoor. The .243 is well known worldwide for its low recoil and superb ballistics, both of which contribute to its multi-game capabilities. With the proper bullets, the .243 can be used to take anything from small varmints all the way up to mule deer. It has also been used for tactical applications in the past, having been used by the LAPD’s SWAT unit during its early years. Overall, this beautifully crafted rifle would, with its superb Leupold scope, make an excellent hunting rifle.
