SCARCE Ross 1905 STRAIGHT PULL Rifle with Bayonet
Description: SCARCE Ross 1905 STRAIGHT PULL Rifle with Bayonet WWI Canadian Rifle Full of Markings with Original Sling & Bayonet Here we present a Scarce Canadian Ross MKII Straight Pull Rifle, made circa 1908. The Ross Rifle was the novel design of Sir Charles Henry Augustus Fredrick Lockhart Ross. They were made in Quebec, Canada, and subsequently adopted by Canada as their primary service rifle. Apparently, the rifles were very impressive on the range, being accurate and very quick to fire. The straight pull bolt design was key to the design and the speed of operation. However, upon its debut on the battlefields of World War I Europe, there were accounts of Canadian soldiers abandoning their Ross Rifles for the more proven and reliable British SMLE Rifles. Mud from the trenches was ultimately the demise of the Ross. The Ross was subsequently pulled from front line service and replaced with the SMLE. Nevertheless, Ross Rifles went on to be used by many infantrymen during training, and some were even sold to the US upon their entry into the Great War for the same purpose, given the unpreparedness of the US. About 20,000 of the rifles crossed the border. This specimen bears US Ordnance markings and includes the original NOBUCKL M1917 sling (which is correct for those who came into the US) and Ross bayonet. Its 28 inch barrel is an earlier, shorter version. Numerous acceptance, issue, and unit markings litter the right side of the butt stock. The left side of the receiver is marked “ROSS RIFLE CO. QUEBEC CANADA 1905/PATENTED.” A date on the butt stock appears to be “1908”. The original bayonet is marked “ROSS RIFLE CO./QUEBEC/PATENTED 1907”. Among other markings, both the bayonet and frog are each marked with “US” and the US Ordnance flaming bomb. The underside of the pistol grip of the stock also appears to be marked in this manner, though it is a bit faint. Overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces retain about 75% of the original blue finish. The markings in the metal are clear and legible. The stock has been lightly sanded. The markings in the wood are mostly legible. The bore has good rifling and is in very good condition. The action is strong, HOWEVER, please note that there is a small bolt stop on the left side of the gun that is meant to retain the bolt from falling out of the gun or hitting the shooter in the face. The bolt stop spring that holds this device in place is currently absent. We must implore the buyer to be aware of this and not attempt to shoot this rifle until examined and repaired by a qualified gunsmith. With that being said, this is a scarce US marked Canadian Ross 1905 MKII Straight Pull Rifle with WWI history. This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic. One other found at $2000 without sling or bayonet! Barrel is 28 inches in length. Caliber: .303 British Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING. Will need to be sent to your local FFL. Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $1200 #10543 SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes |
