Absolutely Scarce Bay State Arms Deluxe Match Rifle Made 1885 Fires .32 Long Colt and .32 Rimfire, Vernier Sight
Description: Guns by Sally-always the best for less. We are extremely proud to offer this seldom seen single shot match rifle, made by Bay State Arms. Only made in Uxbridge during 1885 and 1886, these are perhaps the most rare of all American made single shot rifles. The American Society of Arms Collectors says this: "Among collectors of antique single-shot rifles, there seems to be a general agreement that the "match grade" rifle produced by the Bay State Arms Company of Uxbridge, Massachusetts, is among the least-common American target rifles. Various authors on the subject, such as Ned Roberts, have gone so far as to call it "one of the rarest of match rifles." That said, let's see what makes it different. With its 3 digit serial number, this gun was made in the year of our Lord 1885. This was the heyday of the single shot, with target shooting being very popular, with many manufacturers creating a single shot rifle. The Bay State is really set apart by 2 held patents. The first was a barrel takedown system that utilized a tapered cross bolt with a lever head. She can break down in about 10 seconds, and lock up again, just as fast. The second is a sliding firing firing pin, mounted in the falling block. This allows this rifle to fire both centerfire and rimfire cartridges. The changeover takes less than a minute. While guns like the Marlin 1892 and Frank Wesson 2 trigger could also perform this feat, the Bay State has the advantage. The Marlin required 2 firing pins, and 1 always got lost. The Wesson used a hammer mounted pin, which could allow a ruptured cartridge to blow back toward the shooter. All in all, this is a very distinct rifle, and the low production makes it very attractive to the collector. One source states that all Bay State rifles were fitted with hollow cast Swiss butt plates. The icing on the cake is that this rifle has a shotgun style butt plate with the factory monogram that is a work of art unto itself. There is also an adjustment screw protruding from the trigger plate. Unlike set triggers of the period, I believe it is a simple adjustment of trigger letoff. She is in very good condition, with nicely figured walnut with a checkered pistol grip. The matching checkered forend has a Schnabel tip. She is equipped with a midrange vernier sight in back, and a globe up front, fitted with a very fine post with a bead on top. It is an absolute pleasure to hold and sight this fine rifle. The bore of the 26 inch barrel is very good, with plenty of shine and strong rifling. Please, do not confuse this early rifle with the watered down shotguns offered after the takeover by Hopkins and Allen. If you have been looking for the right single shot match rifle to collect or for investment, but you want the one nobody else has, then look no further.
