Carved 18th C GERMANIC Smoothbore FLINTLOCK Musket
Description:
Carved 18th C GERMANIC Smoothbore FLINTLOCK Musket
Maker Marked & Featuring a Beautifully Carved Stock
Here we present an antique Germanic Smoothbore Flintlock Musket, made circa the 18th Century, in Germanic Europe. These Germanic muskets and rifles provided the basis for early American gunmaking as many craftsman immigrated and settled in pockets, most notably in Pennsylvania, where the firearms industry thrived and influenced American firearms for generations.
This gun is marked with a “RM” hallmark on top at the breech. There are raised relief scroll designs that include a boar on the left behind the cheekpiece. The forend cap is made out of horn, as is the tip of the ramrod and two decorative screws that accent the carved in “butt plate”. The trigger guard is also made of carved wood rather than the typical brass or iron. Very similar fowling pieces made by Peter Wittemann of Giessen, Hessen, are known.
The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces are smooth and clean. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is beautifully carved and in great shape. The bore is smooth and clean. The action is excellent.
