ERNEST DUMOULIN MODEL PIONNIER SIDEPLATED BOXLOCK DOUBLE RIFLE 470NE CALIBER
Description: Ernest Dumoulin Model Pionnier Dangerous game double rifle 470ne caliber ... 27" Barrels ... LOP 15 3/4" (front trigger) ... LOA 45" ... DAC 2" ... DAH 2 1/2" ... 3/16" Cast Off...Empty weight 10lbs 14oz ... Double triggers (articulated front trigger) ... ejectors ... Non automatic safety ... Hidden Greener style crossbolt
The 27" barrels have bright excellent bores and retain 98% of a rich dark blue finish showing only some faint rub marks where the forearm attaches and light fading around the muzzles.
The engraver, V. Grojean, has signed the gun on the right side of the triggerguard. The sideplates and frame display wonderful fine banknote engraved African game scenes of a pair of male lions on the left side, a pair of cape buffalo looking like you owe them money on the right, and an extraordinary charging elephant on the bottom plate all done in habitat with the balance of the metal done in high relief shaded acanthus leaf scroll. This same beautiful engraving extends to the triggerguard with long tang reaching to the engraved gripcap, and the elongated top tang reaching over the comb, as well as the top lever, and forearm metal. The frame has strengthening bolsters carved into the corners of the standing breech and all of the metal surfaces are coin finished enhancing the engraving details and giving the gun a distinctive look in addition to showing very little if any wear. The gripcap with hinged sight trap contains an extra front blade sight. The rifle features double triggers (front articulated), ejectors, non automatic safety, and hidden Greener cross bolt. It is equipped with a ramp mounted front blade sight with flip-up ivory night sight and a two leaf express sight with one standing and one folding leaf mounted on a finely matted quarter rib.
The highly figured pistolgrip stock rates very good plus having a few minor nicks and scratches over a smooth rubbed oil finish and the beavertail forearm shows similar minor scuffs with similar finish. Checkering is extensive, finely cut, well executed, and remains crisp with a couple of tiny abrasions in the forearm. The forearm has a push button release mounted in an engraved escutcheon and the stock has a nicely carved beaded right hand cheekpiece with a gold monogram oval inlaid into the toeline of the stock with some initials done in script. A Decelerator pad has been fitted providing a length of 15 3/4" from the front trigger. Included is a very nice oak and leather case with brass corners lined in burgundy baize with padded canvas over cover. It contains a two piece brass cleaning rod without accessories, an ebony handled chamber brush in brass sleeve, a nickel plated oil bottle, and three rosewood handle turn screws. In addition, there is a maker's embossed leather label affixed to the inside cover.
This is a finely crafted modern version of a classic dangerous game rifle with all of the bells and whistles making it as practical as it is beautiful.
