WW1 Era Mauser Small Ring 98 Custom Guild Rifle in 6.5x57 Mauser Caliber w/ period Dr. Gerard "D" 7.5X Claw-mount Scope SALE PENDING
Description: This is a really neat World War 1 era German "Guild" rifle brought home as a trophy rifle after World War 2. This rifle features a 23.5" barrel with a ramp-style front sight and express-style rear with a flip-up leaf chambered in 6.5x57 Mauser, double-set triggers, and an original claw mounted Dr. W. Gerard Model "D" 7.5X scope. It is exceptional in that it retains the original scope that has been on it since the World War 1 period when the rifle was built. As the U.S. Military took town after town in Germany at the end of World War 2, all of the civilians in these towns were forced to turn in their guns at collection points set up by the U.S. Army. The usual practice was to remove the bolt from any military or commercial rifle and put them in different piles to prevent anyone from being able to load and fire them quickly. Our troops were often able to "liberate" any of these weapons that they liked and carry or ship them home as war trophies. This rifle was one of these trophies. It appears to be all-original except for the bolt, which is mostly a WW2 K98 bolt. This was quite common as the soldier would pull the rifle out of one pile, and any bolt that fit and worked properly out of another. The bolt handle and safety were then altered at some point after the war to properly clear the scope. As you can see in the pictures provided this is a great looking rifle and scope. It is in great shape overall with a nice even blue finish on the metal parts and scope. The patina on the finish matches on all of the parts and it is obvious that it has all been together for a long time. The bore in this 6.5x57 Mauser rifle is in great shape. It appears bright and clean throughout the length of the bore and the rifling still looks strong. We have no doubt that this rifle should still shoot very accurately. The original Monte-Carlo style stock with a pancake cheek-piece is in great shape overall. It is free from any cracks in the wrist or major damage, and appears to be 100% sound. The worst damage to the stock is a small piece of wood missing at the toe of the butt. While it chipped away that small piece of wood it did not break the horn buttplate, which is still in place on the buttstock. The original horn buttplate is engraved with the serial number of the rifle, 14846, and is in average condition with a small crack at the top that runs to the top screw that is holding it on. The hand-cut grooves on the middle of the buttplate are still in good shape. The original sling swivels mounted on the stock are still in place as well. Everything on this rifle seems to work 100%. All of the controls function properly and the action is smooth and locks into battery with no play. The double set triggers are exceptional. They are adjustable for poundage, and as they sit now when they are set it is a "hair" trigger that breaks at the touch. As mentioned before, this rifle comes with a superb original scope mounted on it with the claw mount system. The scope is a Dr. W. Gerard Model "D" made during the WW1 period in Charlottenburg, a wealthy district in Berlin, Germany. The Model "D" is a very well-made 7.5 power scope with a post and crosshair "sniper style" reticle and it is in excellent shape with bright and clear optics. All of the scope adjustments work properly and no doubt will still hold zero. This rifle was some American G.I.'s pride and joy at one point and now it can be someone else's. The ammunition is still loaded commercially by several manufacturers, so if the new owner so chooses it could be shot at the range or in the field rather than solely put up as an investment.
