One-of-a-kind custom 375 Whelen 03A3 by Lex Webernick/Rifles, Inc., Shilen, Brown Precision et al ACCURATE!!!
Description:
This is a true, one-of-a-king full custom rifle for hunting big game. Cartridge is the very effective 375 Whelen also known as the .375-06. It is a .30-06 case expanded to .375 caliber. As an example, a 235 grain bullet leaves the muzzle at 2630 fps generating 3610 foot pounds of energy (the 300 Win Mag genrates 3548 ft lbs). This rifle took over two years to make. Many people tried to make an accurate 375 Whelen and were challenged. Using a very specific approach, and with the help of a mechanical engineer who also loved this cartridge, you can see in the target photo that it is extremely accurate: that's a 0.385" 100 yard 3-shot group. While a rifle of this caliber and with this horsepower, typically does not need to be that accurate, the confidence it gives the hunter when the chips are down is priceless.
Big game bolt action hunting rifle by gunsmith Lex Webernick, Shilen and others:
?1903/A3 action
Caliber: .375-06 aka 375 Whelen
Shilen match grade semi-heavy barrel, fluted, ~23". Barrel fitted by Shilen (when they still did that work!).
Brown Precision fiberglass stock, bedded by Brown Precision in USMC Green (dark green)
Three position safery
Barrel band front sight (New England Custom Guns)
Rear standing and 1 leaf express sight (NECG).
Barrel tab front sling swivel (NECG)
Timney trigger
Decelerator pad, black
Warne bases and 1" rings, QD. Bases by by Warne.
Teflon coat on gun in black.
Neil Jones micrometer match dies with second set by RCBS. The dies were custom made to precisly match the fired brass from this gun.
About 50-100 pieces of brass.
Shoots 0.385" 3-shot group at 100 yds (see target).
Shoots any bullet up to 300 grain but optimized is 235g Barnes X at 2630 fps with SD of 8FPS. Load is 58g of H4895. This load has no pressure issues at all as is normal with very accurate loads. Ballistically it is 75% the energy of a 375 H&H at 66% of the recoil.
Twenty-seven (27) rounds of loaded ammo from Superior Ammunition in their box
All metalwork done except as above done by gunsmith Lex Webernick of Rifles, Inc.
Condition: A few honest paint dings on the stock from honest hunting use. Metal great but a few wear patterns to teflon where the bolt contacts the receiver and locking lugs. 100% reliable and less than 1/2" groups all day.
Rifle and dies costs: $6030 circa 1991 and took over two years to make.
One hunting guide said "It just knocks a golf-ball sized hole in everything you shoot with it but you can eat the meat right up to the hole."
