REMINGTON & SONS Antique MILITARY Pattern .43 SPANISH Rolling Block RIFLE
19th Century INDIAN WARS Era Military Style Rifle
Description: REMINGTON & SONS Antique MILITARY Pattern .43 SPANISH Rolling Block RIFLE 19th Century INDIAN WARS Era Military Style Rifle Here we present an antique E. Remington & Sons Military Pattern Rolling Block Rifle, made circa the early 1870s in Ilion, New York. The Remington Rolling Block rifle is a breech-loading rifle that was produced from the mid-1860s into the early 20th century by E. Remington and Sons (later Remington Arms Company). The action was extremely strong, and could easily withstand the increased pressure of the new smokeless powders coming into use by the late 1880s. The Remington Rolling Block had a sturdy, simple action that was relatively inexpensive, just what many governments wanted in the latter half of the 19th Century. Remington rolling block rifles were produced as military muskets, rifles, and carbines as well as for civilian use and were adopted by many countries. These included the U.S. (first by the Navy in 1867 and later in limited numbers in .45-70 by the Army), Argentina, Denmark, Guatemala, Holland, Puerto Rico (Voluntarios), Spain, Sweden/Norway, Uruguay, and others. They were also purchased by state militias, most notably the New York Militia. Remington rolling block rifles were produced under license in Belgium, Norway, Sweden, Spain, and perhaps other places. Ultimately, over 1.5 million rolling block military rifles were produced. They were popular with civilians as well. The .43 Spanish was a centerfire cartridge developed by Remington designers around 1867. It was used in early rolling block rifles that Remington manufactured for the government of Spain. The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is bright and nicely rifled. This example spirts a solid stock with less than expected wear. Markings are legible, but have worn. Here is a great refinished example for the collection! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 36 inches.
