Prototype Charles Barnes (Remington Model 24) Takedown .22 Rifle
Description: NSN, .22 LR, 22 3/4" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a very interesting rifle, purchased out of the Remington factory, that bears a resemblance to a Model 24 auto-loading rifle with right side ejection port and is devoid of markings except for "DESIGNED & BUILT, 1922/-BY-/CHARLES H. BARNES, ILION, N.Y." on the left of the frame. The metal retains about 97% of the original blue finish with some mild silvering along a few of the edges and a small area of smooth gray-brown metal at the muzzle. The walnut buttstock with loading port and the tapered Schnabel forend are almost identical to those used on the Model 24 and are in fine condition with only scattered minor handling marks and blemishes in the original varnish finish. Charles H. Barnes was one of Remington's in-house designers at the time this rifle was manufactured and copies of his U.S. patent no. 1089621 of March 10, 1914 (the patent is under Mr. Barnes' name and this may have been a private venture rather than something for Remington Arms itself). We have test fired this rifle, it shoots and ejects the case but has an issue feeding the next round. This rifle appears to be a last effort of in-house designers to build a salable .22 rifle just prior to the Jan. 3, 1923 introduction of the Browning designed Model 24 in .22 long rifle. Mr. Barnes still worked for Remington in 1944. This is a very interesting and possibly unique rifle that would make a fantastic addition to any collection of Remington or American rimfire rifles.
