Remington Model 722 .300 Savage Made 1949 with Weaver K2.5 Scope
Description: The Remington Model 722 was the direct predecessor of the famous Model 700 rifle. It traces its origins back to the Enfield-designed Model 1917 (aka Pattern 1917 or P17) rifle used by the U.S. Army during World War I alongside the famous M1903 Springfield. Post-war, Remington produced a modified M1917 as the Model 30 from 1921 until 1940. It was replaced with the Model 720, which was produced until the between 1941 and 1944. It was replaced in 1948 by both the Model 721 and 722, both of which are considered to be one of the first modern, affordable sporting rifles. The 721 was intended for long-action cartridges while the 722 was built for short-action cartridges. Both models introduced push-feed to the design, with the Mauser claw-extractor of the 720 being deleted to speed up production time. Overall, the 722 was an excellent rifle and like the 721, paved the way forward to the famous Model 700, introduced in 1962. This example is chambered in 300 Savage which was offered between 1948 until 1959. It is the predecessor of the famous .308 Winchester round. The difference between the two cartridges is chamber pressure and neck length. The .300 Savage operates at around 53000 psi versus 62000 for the .308. The neck of the .300 Savage is 0.275 inches long while the .308’s is .308 inches in length. There is an old rule of thumb that in order to provide adequate seating of the bullet in the case, the length of the neck should roughly equal the diameter of the bullet. Cartridges like the .300 Savage and .300 Win Mag are thus considered to have “short” necks. With a barrel code of “R UU” this rifle was made in November of 1949. At an age of almost 73 years old, this rifle has seen some use and physical alterations, but remains in good shape overall. It has been stenciled with someone’s driver’s license number sadly, but the rest of the wear to the rifle is fairly minor. The wood is in fairly good shape with minor handling wear, but has been customized to an extent. The right side of the stock has been inlayed with two diamonds, while the left side is plain. The pistol grip has customized with a special wooden cap. The fore end has been given a reverse slant angled tip. A ventilated rubber recoil pad has been installed. The scope base is a Redfield while the scope is a Weaver K2.5. The scope has some light pitting on the surface but the view through the lenses is good. The bolt and the floor plate exhibit a patina. The bluing on the barrel exhibits a few spots of loss. The barrel is stenciled in two spots, one on the left hand side, and once on the bottom. There are a couple of light scratches on the left hand side towards the muzzle end. The bore is excellent shape with no rust or pitting.
