Remington 722 .222 Remington w/Boyd’s Adjustable Thumbhole Stock, Leupold Scope
Description: The Models 721 and 722 are considered to be some of the first modern, economically produced sporting rifles, their design largely being continued with the following and highly successful Model 700. Both the 721 and 722 replaced the short-lived Model 720, a development of the Model 1917 rifle, and hence, a development of the Mauser Model 1898 rifle. Manufactured with a high level of precision, both the 721 and the 722 are known for their exceptional accuracy. Remington marketed the two rifles as having the strongest action ever built, a trait they shared with their Mauser forebearer. Unlike the Mauser, however, the 721/722 featured a new encased bolt head. The large claw extractor of the Mauser was deleted in favor of a smaller, but effective part mounted within the recessed bolt face. Examples in excellent condition have become very collectible in recent years. Both the 721 and 722 were introduced in 1948. Production of both ceased when the Model 700 was introduced in 1962. The only real difference between the 721 and 722 was that the 721 used a long-action while the 722 used a short-action. The barrel code isn’t fully stamped, but the month and year can still be established with a little knowledge of Remington’s barrel date codes. The first letter looks like an F which is not among the Remington monthly code letters (B-L-A-C-K-P-O-W-D-E-R-X where B = January, with each following letter indicating the remaining months of the year). It can only be an “E” which indicates it was made in October. It also has a different font than the other two letters. The middle letter “Z” is stamped correctly but the third, another “Z”, is not, only being a half-stamp. It is still obvious that it must be a “Z”. The two Zs indicate the rifle was produced in 1953. This was the last FULL year wherein the barrel codes had three letters, a practice that began in 1943. Only in January of 1954 was an “AA” stamp used. In February of ’54, Remington switched to a single letter “A” for the remainder of the year. The following stamp to the right of the second “Z” is unrecognizable, while the two-digit number (“70”) to its right is the assembly number. The rifle is chambered for the older .222 Remington cartridge, introduced to the 722’s cartridge lineup in 1950. Originally, the 722 was only chambered for the .257 Roberts and the .300 Savage. The .222 Remington’s claim to fame is that it was the first commercial rimless .22-caliber cartridge in the U.S. It was an entirely new design and has no parent case. It was popular from its introduction in 1950 until the 1970s. It was known by such nicknames as the “triple deuce”, “triple two”, and “treble two”. The rifle has been customized with a Boyd’s At-One Thumbhole adjustable stock. It can be adjusted for both length of pull and cheek rest height. The original stock is also present but is in need of a refinish. The barrel and receiver have a few spots of light rust but retain the majority of the original finish. The barrel has been bedded in the stock by a gunsmith. The bolt handle (in the white) has some minor rust on the handle but is otherwise in excellent shape. The original sights are still present, but the rear sight elevator has been removed to make room for the scope. The rifle has been fitted with a Leupold VX-Freedom Scope (3-9x40 mm). The turret at the top of the scope is set up for the .350 Legend cartridge, NOT the .222 Remington. It is possible that the scope could be returned to Leupold for the fitting of a turret set for the .222 Remington. Despite having the wrong turret, the previous owner has stated that the rifle is very accurate, which is no surprise for a 722. The bore is, of course, in excellent shape. This 722 would make an excellent hunting rifle. SOLD Rifle Caliber: .222 Remington Manufacturer: Remington Arms Co.
