SPRINGFIELD/REMINGTON 1870 U.S. NAVY ROLLING BLOCK MILITARY RIFLE, .50-70 CALIBER
Description: SPRINGFIELD/REMINGTON 1870 U.S. NAVY ROLLING BLOCK MILITARY RIFLE, .50-70 CALIBER. This example has fine blue on the barrel and correct sights. The receiver is an uncleaned gray with the correct Eagle Motif over "USN, SPRINGFIELD, 1870" stamping on the right side of the receiver. This, along with a faint wrist cartouche are the only military markings on this rifle. The upper tang has the correct "REMINGTON'S PATENT" over patent dates stamping used on these Springfield made rifles. The cleaning rod appears to be a replacement and the small bar between the pins on the left side is missing- easily replaced with either an original or repro which can be found inexpensively online. Forend with two barrel bands and correct swivels are fine, showing only normal light handling. The butt stock has a chip at the upper tang on the left side, but otherwise is fine. The butt plate has the "U.S." stamping on the top. Bright excellent bore with one slight "ring" in the middle that is shallow and does not appear on the outside of the barrel. Short bayonet lug on the underside of the barrel is intact. Lots of good info on these in the book by George Layman REMINGTON ROLLING BLOCK MILITARY RIFLES OF THE WORLD as well as in John D. McAulay's book RIFLES OF THE UNITED STATES NAVY & MARINE CORPS. These rifles saw pretty hard service in the Navy and afterward when they were sold to Civilians or foreign Governments.
