SCARCE REMINGTON/SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1870 U.S. NAVY .50-70 ROLLING BLOCK MILITARY RIFLE
Description: SCARCE REMINGTON/SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1870 U.S. NAVY .50-70 ROLLING BLOCK MILITARY RIFLE. These were actually made by Springfield on a royalty agreement with Remington from 1870-1871. The first group of these were manufactured with the rear sight too close to the receiver (1/2 inch), and they rejected by the Navy and sold to a commercial firm who then sold them to France for the Franco-Prussian war. The next group of these rifles had the rear sights correctly placed 3 1/8” in front of the receiver and were accepted by the Navy. This was then the regulation issued rifle of the U.S. Navy through the 1870s. This example has the correct eagle motif over USN/SPRINGFIELD/1870 marking on the right side of the receiver plus the correct anchor stamp on top of the barrel ahead of the receiver with the inspector initials P/H.B.R. on the left side of the barrel. It also retains the original rear sight and bayonet lug under the barrel- these often ground off. The butt stock and forend appear to have had a heavy coat of stock finish added along with small chip repair just ahead of the top tip of the butt plate- minor- and some light sanding to the wood of the butt stock. The barrels were finished in the white or bright with no blue and this one has aged nicely to a deep gray without any evidence of cleaning or polishing. The receiver is a dark patina with sharp markings what appears to be some dark blue case color remaining. Mechanically tight with excellent bore. There is a great deal of information regarding the history and issuance of this model in John D. McAulay's excellent book RIFLES OF THE UNITED STATES NAVY AND MARINE CORPS 1866-1917. These don’t show up too frequently. SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: REMINGTON/SPRINGFIELD Model: 1870 MILITARY RIFLE Barrel Length: 32 1/2 Caliber Info: .50-70 Condition: VG+ Bore Condition: EXC. |
