REMINGTON ROLLING BLOCK .50-70 NEW YORK STATE CONTRACT MILITARY RIFLE WITH BAYONET/SHEATH, MADE C.1871
Description: REMINGTON ROLLING BLOCK .50-70 NEW YORK STATE CONTRACT MILITARY RIFLE WITH BAYONET/SHEATH, MADE C.1871. There were two contracts for purchase of these by the state of New York. The first contract was in 1871 and the second beginning in 1873. Those from the first contract have the last patent date on the upper tang of 1871 with some of the late 2nd. contract having a last patent date of 1874. This example has the earlier 1871 date. There are a number of variations in the way these rifles were finished. Some were entirely finished "in the white" with no blue or case color on the metal parts. This example is probably one of these as it shows only unfinished metal surfaces on both the receiver, barrel and barrel bands, butt plate, trigger guard etc. It retains the correct rear military sight , cleaning rod and swivels. This model also had the advanced action in which the hammer is pulled to full cock with two clicks, then the breech block is rolled open for loading. BUT, when the breech block is pushed forward to close, the hammer falls a very short distance to a safety notch. To fire, the hammer has to be pulled back a very small distance to cock the weapon. All Rolling Blocks should have incorporated this as it is an accidental discharge waiting to happen when the breech is closed and the rifle is instantly ready to fire. Bore is bright with sharp rifling and any scattered spots of light corrosion are very small. The angular bayonet is also finished bright with scabbard of white leather in fine condition and bright metal. Wood is excellent with one tiny chip (hardly worth mentioning) at the upper left tang juncture, shows a number of inspection cartouches at both sides of the wrist area and the usual rack number stamped on the top of the butt plate. $1495.
