RARE .44 Cal...Remington Revolving Rifle ...Fine Condition....LAYAWAY?
Description: S O L D..........VERY SCARCE....44 caliber. .........26.25" octagonal barrel. SN: 128. Blued frame, cylinder and iron furniture including scroll shaped triggerguard, browned barrel, varnished walnut butt with crescent buttplate. Single action percussion revolving rifle with six-shot round cylinder. Top of octagonal barrel marked in three lines: PATENTED SEPT. 14, 1858 / E. REMINGTON & SONS ILION, NEW YORK. U.S.A. / NEW MODEL. The marking is quite weak and the bottom line is essentially illegible. The matching serial number 128 appears under the barrel where it is concealed by the loading lever, on the lower frame tang, on the side of the upper frame tang where it is concealed by the buttstock and in the upper tang mortise cut out of the buttstock. The rear of the cylinder is not numbered but is marked with a W. The lower left rear of the frame is marked 44. The cylinder is machined with safety notches at the rear and measures 2.2" in overall length, roughly .2" longer than a standard Remington New Model Army revolver cylinder, which is correct for these revolving rifles. Additionally the loading lever measures 7" in length, without plunger, 2.25" longer than a standard New Model Army loading lever, again a correct feature for the Remington revolving rifles. The rifle is equipped with a folding leaf rear sight and a dovetailed German silver blade front sight. It is believed that Remington produced less than 1,000 of there revolving rifles that were essentially long barreled versions of the New Model Army Revolver with buttstocks and slightly longer cylinders and loading levers. They were in production from 1866 to 1879 and were cataloged as available with 24", 26" and 28" barrels. Flaynderman's notes that the large majority were produced in the shorter and longer barrel length with the 26" variant being quite scarce. Like most percussion revolving long arms they were only moderately successful and were quickly obscured by lever action cartridge rifles. A scarce percussion rifle for the Remington collector. Condition: Fine with possible previous cleaning. Very good/Fine bore is mostly bright with strong rifling and some scattered oxidation. Barrel with most of the reapplied brown and weak markings. Frame and cylinder with some of the old applied blue finish. Matching numbers, nice mechanical functional. Stock with much of the old varnish, showing scattered bumps, dings and mars. S/H $55.....Thanks...Greg 351-356 SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: Remington Model: Revolving Rifle Serial Number: 128 Barrel Length: 26.25 Condition: Fine |
