Antique REMINGTON .32 EXL Rimfire Breech Loading ROLLING BLOCK Rifle Late-1800s
Description: Antique REMINGTON .32 EXL Rimfire Breech Loading ROLLING BLOCK Rifle Late-1800s Here we present an antique Remington Rolling Block Rifle, made circa the early 1870s in Ilion, New York. Manufactured from 1866 to 1888, the Remington rolling-block cartridge rifle was so popular that more than half the world’s armies adopted it or purchased quantities for police or martial purposes. During the American Civil War, gunsmith Leonard M. Geiger designed the basic action, in which the shooter “rolled” the breechblock backward with the thumb and inserted a cartridge in the breech, before the block “rolled” forward and the interlocking hammer cocked in one fluid motion. E. Remington & Sons, America’s oldest firearms manufacturer, took over Geiger’s patent and assigned one of its chief engineers, Joseph Rider, to make the necessary refinements. Rider brought the new action along, and The action on the Rolling Block was extremely strong and could easily withstand the increased pressure of the new smokeless powders coming into use by the late 1880s. The Remington Rolling Block had a sturdy, simple action that was relatively inexpensive, just what many governments wanted in the latter half of the 19th Century. They were popular with civilians as well. Along with the Sharps rifle it was one of two rifles probably used more than any other by the buffalo hunters who hunted the American bison herds in the 1870s and 1880s. Civilian Remington rolling block rifles, and later surplus military rifles, became very popular among hunters in Scandinavia, particularly for moose hunting, with ammunition for the rifles being commonly available on the civilian market into the 1920s-1930s. The overall condition is good. The action is strong. The bore is surprisingly bright with well-defined rifling. The stock has been heavily repaired around the wrist and much use and wear is apparent. “32 EXL” is stamped on the underside of the octagonal barrel. Here is a Remington rolling block rifle in a scarce chambering! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 28 inches.
