Here we present an antique Half Stock Back Action Percussion American Rifle with a Remington made barrel, made circa the mid-19th Century. Its stout octagonal barrel is in .42 caliber, large enough to take small to medium sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression. Rifle manufacture in the mid-to-late 19th Century was rapidly changing over from thousands of craftsmen all over the United States and on the Frontier making and selling their wares, to the large factories with standardized assembly lines and modern manufacturing techniques. Many makers’ names of the so-called Kentucky long rifles have been lost over time. This rifle is one such example.

According to an article in the American Rifleman Magazine (NRA), the author states "It is thought that for the first 30 years of business, Remington produced only rifled barrels at the forge in Ilion. Remington received so many orders, they allowed him to start a real factory along the Erie Canal in Ilion. And, by 1828, he was firmly established as the area's premiere barrel maker. Numerous examples of flintlock and percussion rifles bear the name "REMINGTON" and "P & S REMINGTON" on their barrels, having been completed as rifles by gunmakers throughout New York and well into New England."

The overall condition is good. Dark patina throughout. The action is excellent. Trigger must be set. The bore is in good condition, untouched, with strong rifling. Replacement ramrod. The stock shows much use. There is a short, stable split between the side plate and the back of the barrel, otherwise, solid throughout.
