WWI Russian Contract 1915 New England Westinghouse M91 Mosin Nagant in 7.62x54R **Finnish Capture** SOLD
Description: Unlike most of the Westinghouse manufactured M91 Mosin Nagants we encounter in the U.S., this is a very interesting Finnish capture. New England Westinghouse along with Remington U.M.C. were contracted by Imperial Russia to manufacture the Model 1891 Mosin Nagant rifle to supplement their own production of the weapon for use in World War 1. Both firms made significant numbers of these rifles before problems within the Russian procurement system and America's involvement in World War 1 ended production for the Russians. Interestingly enough, both firms also made these Mosin Nagants for U.S. contracts with 200,000 supplied by Westinghouse and 78,950 supplied by Remington U.M.C. This particular rifle is an early production rifle for the Russian contract. This rifle would have been used in WWI and at some point and later captured by the Finnish Army and restocked for use during the WW2. The patina on the rifle in general is nice and consistent, it certainly looks better than you would expect a World War 1 and World War 2 combat-used rifle made in 1915 to look like. As you can see in the pictures, the blue finish on the receiver, magazine housing, and barrel is very strong. The bore in this Westinghouse M91 is in great shape overall. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and there are no visible bulges, dents, or other major imperfections. We have no doubt that this M91 would be an excellent shooter if the new owner is so inclined. All of the controls on this N.E.W. M91 are in perfect working order, as well as the original adjustable rear sight which has been re-marked in Meters by the Finns. The bolt works smoothly by hand and goes into battery perfectly. The Finnish supplied stocks were cut and joined together with a finger design as this was found to reduce the flex and stress on the stocks when used in the extreme cold tempuratures commonly found in Finland. This rifle has the rounded finger joints which indicates it is a World War Two war time produced rifle. The stock shows wear and tear typical of military surplus rifles, but has nice color and grain. The magazine floor plate and butt plate are un-numbered. All in all, this is a very nice example of a scarce variation. An investment worthy Mosin Nagant with a very interesting U.S./Russian/Finnish military history. This would make an excellent rifle for a miltary collection as it likely saw action in two world wars and on multiple fronts.
