VERY EARLY ATTIC CONDITION 1892/1896 KRAG RIFLE, #12XXX, MADE 1895
Description: VERY EARLY ATTIC CONDITION 1892/1896 KRAG RIFLE, #12XXX, MADE 1895. While called the Model 1892, they were actually first issued in 1894. They were simply stamped "1894" with the usual Springfield markings onthe left side of the action with the serial number etc. Originally they were made with a cleaning rod under the barrel through the forend. This example has the correct markings etc. and as almost all were, Springfield recalled them and filled the cleaning rod channel and turned them into Model 1896 rifles. This example also has the original very faint cartouche in the stock along with the circle P cartouche behind the trigger guard. Wood is fine and un-sanded showing the classic reddish-brown colorand only some light handling marks. The barrel retains fine lightly aged blue and the receiver has never been cleaned showing a dark natural aged patina with some aged blue on the extractor. Tight action, leather sling, and excellent bore that is only a little dark, but not pitted. These are quite scarce and this is a fine one.
