IHC M1 Garand, RARE Letterkenny Army Depot ( LEAD ) 10-64 Rebuild, MFD 1953 C&R, .30 06
Description: International Harvester M1 Garand semi-automatic rifle in 30-06 caliber manufactured in 1953. The rifle’s receiver leg is electric pencil marked “LEAD / 10-64” indicating it was rebuilt by the Letterkenny Army Depot in Pennsylvania in October 1964. The rifle appears to have retained its original April 1953 dated LMR (Line Material Corp.) barrel as well as its original IHC stock with a Julian date of “3162” (Corresponding to November 11, 1952) stamped in the barrel channel. Barrel ME = 1.5 & TE = 2.0 The stock doesn’t have an orange triangle ink-stamped on the pistol grip as seen on some Letterkenny rebuilt rifles. This may be due to the stock not being replaced during the rebuild, or the mark could have worn off. I have included several photos of the stock to illustrate some of its features that are only associated with IHC stocks and are different from those of other postwar M1 manufacturers. With the exception of an “HRA” marked operating rod and some postwar sight parts, most of the major components of this rifle are “IHC” marked. Some rifles in excellent and/or serviceable condition were sent to ordnance facilities for inspection, minor repair and cleaning but did not require a rebuild. Instead of a rebuild, only certain superseded parts (such as rear sights and unmodified operating rods) were replaced. When this occurred, the rifles retained most of their original factory components. When the Vietnam War heated up in the mid-1960s, additional M1s in the government’s inventory were needed as supplemental service rifles and for foreign military aid. Several U.S. government ordnance facilities, including the Letterkenny Army Depot, were given contracts to overhaul M1s during that period. Unlike earlier rebuild markings, which were stamped on the stock, in the mid-1960s the ordnance facilities typically utilized identity codes that were hand-etched on the right side of the receiver leg by electric pen. In most cases, the code was comprised of an abbreviation for the facility ID and the month and year that the rebuild was performed. This rifle’s receiver leg is marked in this manner with “LEAD / 10-64”. Letterkenny Armory Depot’s 1960’s rebuilds are highly sought after by collectors and are considered by many to be the best. This rifle remains in the same condition as it was received in from the CMP around 2004 and hasn’t been fired since. I’m guessing at the date since I can’t find my original CMP paperwork. IHC Garands were the least produced of the postwar M1 rifles with only 337,623 made from 1953 to 1957. Additionally, 1960s LEAD rebuilds are considered by many to be the highest quality rebuilds of the era and LMR barrels are known for being some of the most accurate M1 barrels produced (on par with post 1960s barrels). Don’t miss an opportunity to add this very desirable M1 Garand to your collection. I’m not an M1 Garand expert so please don’t rely solely on my description of the rifle and its components. Please look at the detailed pictures carefully, consult an expert if needed, and feel free to message me with any questions or to request for more pictures as I was limited to 15 pictures for this advertisement.
