WW2 German 1939 Berlin-Lubecker "237 Code" K98 Mauser Rifle in 8mm Mauser
** Nice Non-Import Vet Bring-Back ** SOLD
Description: This is a very nice example of the main battle rifle of Nazi Germany, the K98 Mauser rifle in 8x57mm caliber (8mm Mauser). This rifle is a "237" code made by Berlin Lubecker and is dated 1939. It is a WW2 war trophy rifle brought home by a U.S. soldier and is not import marked. It is all-matching except for the bolt, floorplate, and follower. All the other numbered parts are matching to the "177m" serial number, including the stock, handguard, and all of the stock hardware including even the bandspring. On these 1939 rifles they really numbered just about every single part, no matter how small. Even the screw heads are numbered that hold the triggerguard on. The bolt all matches itself, and it is our opinion that it was captured with the mis-matched floorplate and follower as they look like they have been on the rifle forever. As was the custom of the time, captured or surrendered rifles went into one pile and the bolts into another. The Americans did this to make it harder for a prisoner to attempt to use it as a weapon. If a U.S. solider wanted to take a K98 home he would go over and grab the rifle out of one pile and a bolt out of the other. This is why we often see K98s that are all-matching except for the bolt, or in this case nearly all-matching except for the bolt. As you can see in the pictures, this rifle has an aged brown/gray patina on the blued metal parts. While the finish shows some age and wear, it has a good combat-used look to it and the everything looks consistent. The bore in this K98 is very good, clean with nice sharp rifling throughout.
