1942 Dated WORLD WAR 2 AUSSIE LITHGOW SMLE No. 1 Mk. III* Rifle .303 C&R
Primary INFANTRY WEAPON of the BRITISH EMPIRE
Description: 1942 Dated WORLD WAR 2 AUSSIE LITHGOW SMLE No. 1 Mk. III* Rifle .303 C&R Primary INFANTRY WEAPON of the BRITISH EMPIRE Here we present a C&R Lithgow Short Magazine Lee-Enfield (SMLE) No. 1 MK III* Rifle, made in 1942 at the Lithgow Small Arms Factory in Lithgow, Australia. Lithgow manufactured the SMLE No. 1 Mk III from 1912 through 1953. The Lee-Enfield is a bolt-action, magazine fed, repeating rifle that served as the main firearm used by the military forces of the British Empire and Commonwealth during the first half of the 20th century. The best-known Lee–Enfield rifle, the SMLE Mk III, was introduced on January 26, 1907. During the First World War, the SMLE Mk III was found to be too complicated and expensive to manufacture, and demand outpaced the supply. In late 1915 the Mk III* was introduced incorporating several changes, the most prominent of which were the deletion of the magazine cut-off mechanism, which when engaged permits the feeding and extraction of single cartridges only while keeping the cartridges in the magazine in reserve, and the long-range volley sights. Rifles with some or all of these features present are found, as the changes were implemented at different times in different factories and as stocks of parts were depleted. The magazine cut-off was reinstated after the First World War ended, and not entirely dispensed with in manufacturing until 1933. Some rifles with cut-offs actually remained into the 1960s. The overall condition is very good. Armory refurbished. The action is excellent. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The stock shows use and remains smooth and solid throughout with some refinishing evident. Numbers match on the receiver and bolt. Australia is marked under the wrist. Other inspection markings visible throughout. Own the original! This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic. Barrel is 25 inches. Caliber: .303 British Overall condition as seen in photos.
