SER#48592, 303 British, 25” barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces of this 1945-dated rifle retain about 75% arsenal reapplied blue with light to moderate wear on the high edges and contact points, some areas worn to a silvery gunmetal patina, mild oxidation staining, and scattered light handling marks. The two-piece European walnut stock and handguard are in very good condition with numerous light dings, divots, and handling marks throughout, as well as a few small chips here and there, including one at the heel of the brass buttplate, all consistent with a field-used military rifle. The stock shows some softened proof marks The rifle displays the wire reinforcement along the forend , and reinforcing screw signature to rifles used for launching rifle grenades. The bolt is numbered to another rifle, and the rifle retains the standard open sights. Included is a No. 1 Discharger Cup retaining about 92% black /blue finish with light wear, handling marks, and light oxidation staining. The Cup is RFI-marked and paint numbered “291”, and mounts to the rifle via two claws which fit into the lightening cuts of the nosecap, and is then hand-tightened in place. The range at which the grenade would be projected is controlled via the open and closing of the gas vent along the base. Rifles such as these were used to good effect in the trenches of WWI, being more commonly used than their hand-thrown counterparts by the end of the war.
