1950 Dated ISHAPORE “SMLE” No. 1 Mk. III Rifle C&R GRENADE LAUNCHING CUP With Wire Wrapped/Reinforced “GRENADIER” STOCK
Description: 1950 Dated ISHAPORE “SMLE” No. 1 Mk. III Rifle C&R GRENADE LAUNCHING CUP With Wire Wrapped/Reinforced “GRENADIER” STOCK Here we present a Short Magazine Lee-Enfield (SMLE) No. 1 MK III Rifle, made in 1950 at the Ishapore Rifle Factory, north of Calcutta. In 1904, a rifle factory was established by the British at Ichhapur, anglicized as Ishapore, and began production of the Lee–Enfield rifle, which has continued more or less until the mid-1980s, and possibly the present. The Lee-Enfield is a bolt-action, magazine fed, repeating rifle that served as the main firearm used by the military forces of the British Empire and Commonwealth during the first half of the 20th century. The British Army adopted the .303 Caliber SMLE No. 1 Mk III in 1904 and the Indian Army soon followed. The Ishapore Rifle Factory began manufacturing this weapon in 1909 using British machines and the same specifications followed by the Royal Small Arms Factory. At what must have been its production peak, Ishapore made 600,000 SMLE No. 1 rifles during World War II. During the November 2008 terrorist attack in Bombay, several Indian constables armed with these rifles were among the first responders. Regretfully, most of these weapons jammed after firing a few rounds and did not contribute significantly to the running fire-fight that raged across South Bombay. It was reported that the main cause of weapon malfunction appeared to have simply been poor maintenance. The November 2008 terrorist attacks taught several hard lessons. Among them, it is clear, and has been clear for a long time, that the Indian constable deserves a more effective weapon and better training for combating increasingly well-armed criminals and urban terrorists. The overall condition is fair to good. Patina throughout. The action is excellent. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There are two large sections of copper wire wrapped and soldered on the stock. Stock is solid from what can be seen. Numbers match on the receiver and bolt.
