Swiss Model 1851 Stutzer Percussion Rifle
Description:
Serial #86, .41 Caliber, 32" barrel with a good, lightly pitted bore. This is a German-made Swiss military rifle, and is marked "OBERNDORF" on top of the barrel breech, as well as "KONIGL. WURT. FABRIK" on the lockplate. The barrel has an overall plum-brown patina with some scattered dark brown mottling, some darker brown on the rear of the lockplate and hammer, and some mottled gray metal on the front of the lockplate. The rifle is equipped with double-set tiggers, and both a globe front and tangent rear sight (there is a rear aperture sight mount on the top wrist tang, but it is vacant), and the tubular bayonet mount is present on the right side of the muzzle. The wedge-fastened walnut stock is in fine shape with only minor handling marks scattered about the fine original oil finish, and the stamp of the Canton of Graubunden is present on the left side of the buttstock. The stock furniture has a plum-brown patina consistent with the barrel, and the hooked, target-style buttplate has a few small spots of mild surface oxidation scattered about. A correct, original ramrod is included. These rifles were actually the first federally procured Swiss military weapon, and many were later converted to breech-loading via the Milbank-Amsler system. Original percussion rifles are not seldom seen, and this example rates about fine condition overall. Antique
