Rare Swiss Model 1893 Mannlicher Carbine with Two Digit Serial Number
Description:
Serial #57, 7.5 x 53.5mm, 20 3/4" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is an all-matching numbered, "NEUHAUSEN" marked carbine that retains 97-98% of the original blue finish with touches of mild gray fading on a few of the high and projecting edges. The bolt head is numbered to a different gun("63"), but all other numbers are matching, including the magazine, and the bolt retains its original armory bright finish with only some very mild plum-brown freckling on the bolt knob. The walnut stock and handguard are in excellent shape, with a few very minor handling marks scattered about the original varnish finish. These carbines were used by the Swiss cavalry and are very similar to the Austrian 1895 Mannlicher, but fed from a removable box magazine instead of a Mannlicher clip. They were rather unpopular because Swiss troopers had trouble with reassembling the bolts after cleaning. The Model 1905 Schmidt-Rubin Carbine was designed to replace the Mannlicher in service, and most of these carbines were destroyed during drills making surviving examples extremely rare today. This is an excellent example of one of these seldom seen carbines, and has an extremely low serial number as well. Antique
