US Springfield Model 1888 Round Bayonet Model package
Description: The Model 1888 Round Bayonet is the last variant of the 1873 Trapdoor Springfield (caliber .45-70) produced before the introduction of the 1892 Krag (caliber .30 Army) as the US service rifle. The rifle, built in 1891, is in excellent condition and an outstanding example of the Model 1888 variant. The trapdoor is stamped U.S. Model 1884. The original blue finish is near perfect with the exception of a small area on the rear of the lock plate (see photo). The stock also is in excellent condition with the exception of a small blemish near the top lock bolt on the left side, a couple of insignificant dents on the left wrist area and buttstock, and minor splintering around the bottom of the lock plate possibly caused by removal of the lock (see photos). The case colors are strong on the trapdoor. The bore, chamber, and action are best described as like new. Included with the rifle are an original Indian Wars era Mills ammunition belt “C” closure, original Rock Island Arsenal trapdoor sling, original M1873 headless shell extractor, Model 1879 combination screw-driver (this tool combines all the appendages necssary for dismounting and mounting the rifle), and front sight cover. The Mills belt is in very good to excellent condition. The sling is in fair to good condition. It is supple and has a few repairs. Photos of the belt and sling will be sent on request. The low serial number for the late manufacturing date of this rifle is explained by Poyer and Riesch on page 299 in The .45-70 Springfield (photo copy included): “Collectors will encounter Model 1888 Rifles assembled with all correct parts for the 1890 period an SWP/1890 or SWP/1891 cartouche, but with a much earlier serial numbered receiver …. In order to save costs some of these rifles used earlier receivers taken new from inventory or reused from damaged arms that had been turned in to the armory.” The previous owner included a test target fired at 50 yards, a fired cartridge case, and a manual – Description and Rules for Management of the Springfield Rifle, Carbine, Caliber .45. This is an exceptional package for the collector of US martial arms and accoutrements. Additional photos upon request. As a pre-1898 firearm this rifle can be sent directly to the buyer. Shipping by Priority Mail is free. Payment is by money order, cashier’s check, or personal check (the rifle will be held until a personal check clears). No international shipping.
