1941 Johnson Custom Sporter by Winfield Arms
Description: Many WW II surplus military rifles were converted for sporting use in the 1950s and ‘60s. Among these was the now highly sought 1941 Johnson automatic. Winfield Arms Corporation offered three levels of sporterized Johnsons. The one offered here is the Custom Sporter chambered for the .30-06 that sold for $159.50 in 1953, which is equivalent to $1,462.30 in 2017; the military version sold for $68.50. I need not state the history and characteristics of the 1941 Johnson, as they are well known to sophisticated collectors. As can be seen by the photos this rifle is in excellent condition. It functions well. The bore is bright and shiny with strong rifling. The barrel and magazine cover are blued and the receiver seems to have the original parkerized finish. There are a few minor “nicks” on the bottom of the butt stock. There is a small, hairline crack in the stock at the tang on the right side (circled by red on photo). It has been repaired; I have fired it about 20-30 times and the crack appears stable. I believe the original rubber recoil pad has been replaced. These rubber pads deteriorate with age and become useless. An original Winfield Arms pad in poor condition (treated with rubber preservative) and extra original Winfield custom stock are included with the rifle. I replaced the original rear sight, which is included, with a replica that I drilled and tapped for standard apertures. The front sight is fitted with the hood, which is usually lost. The sporters were not fitted with the bolt hold-open device. This is a premium example of the conversion of an “old” military surplus rifle for sporting use, and, I believe collectable in and of it’s self for historical purposes. For that reason I purchased it to complement my military Johnson and list it for sale only because I am reducing my eclectic collection of firearms. Ironically, the military versions of the 1941 Johnson have become more desired by collectors than what arguably is the scarcer Winfield conversion. Photocopies of the article "Sporterized Johnson Automatic" in the Dope Bag section of the November 1953 American Rifleman, "The Johnson Semiauto Rifle" in the June 1953 American Rifleman, "The Johnson Rifle," a letter by Melvin M. Johnson, Jr. in the August 1953 American Rifleman, and the schematic and disassembly instructions for the "Johnson Semi-Auto Rifle" in the April 1965 American Rifleman are included. The gun is only returnable if not as represented and unfired. Contact me with any questions and for additional images. Shipping and insurance to a FFL or C&R in the lower 48 is $65.00. Payment via cashiers check, bank check, or postal money order. SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes |
