Turkish Forest Service Carbine
1907-15 Mannlicher Berthier 8 x 50R
Description: It has been widely reported that the rifles which were converted by the Turkish Government to the Forestry Carbine configuration were originally all long rifles surrendered by Vichy French retreating into Turkey to escape the Allied armies recapturing North Africa during the Second World War. This is supported in part by the fact that all reported Forestry carbines are Balle N modified, meaning they arrived in Turkey after 1928. "Orman" as found on the receiver ring of these arms is Turkish for "Forest". Al 8000 carbines were built in 1948, probably at Ankara Arsenal, and are in the 3 round configuration of the Mle.1907-15, as opposed to the 5 round configuration of the Mle.1916. This gun is in excellent condition. The blue is very good. The stock has been sanded. The original stock numbers are faint. The bore is strong with some frosting and strong rifling. Note the chip in the stock toe.Look at the pics and ask questions. Comes with 2, 3 round clips and the sling shown. $950 Shipped to lower 48. C & R elligible In 1938-,39 Turkish Customs intercepted a Shipment of MLE. 1907/15 Rifles ( and some Carbines) going from Damascus to Baghdad by Rail. The Railway, built before WWI ( Ottoman Empire) passed from French Syria through a small part of Turkiye, then into British Protectorate Kingdom of Irak. Going to Anti- British factions ( uprising in 1940). The Turks confiscated the lot ( Rifles and several mill. Ammunition, BalleD and Balle 1932N on Three Round Chargers. ( Typical French issue in Colonies/Protectorates.) After the war, Turkiye was having problems with illegal Logging of Turkish ( Circassian) Walnut Trees) and so decided to form a Corps of Forestry Rangers. In order to Arm them with a Carbine in a Hard ( or near impossible) to get Caliber, they Chose to Convert the Confiscated 1939 collection Of Berthiers. This was done by Shortening the stock and Barrel, fitting Mauser 1903 Pattern Front Sight and Sling Band, a Repurposed M1903/08 Muzzle Guard ( from Mauser Carbines in 7,65) and fitting a steel cover between Rear sight ( still O7/15 Long. The bolt handle was slightly turned down, but still the Rifle BH size. Occasionally one may find an original 07/15 Carbine Receiver with original Carbine long handled bolt ( un-common). The steel cover also hid the Post 1932 " N" stamp, and the N stamp on the Receiver may be gone in Remarking, With " TC ORMAN" over" 1948" ( Orman = Forestry) As far as my Turkish Serial Series goes ( C&R Parallax), only 5,000 Forestry Carbines were Produced, With The New 4 digit ( may also be 1,2 or 3 digit.) Serial impressed on LHS Receiver. Usually French origin marking Intact. My Survey ( 2000-2014 circa) does not show any Serial Above 5,000. As Turkish Rebuilds were done in lots of 5,000 or 10,000 Items, it seems only 5000 were made for the Forestry Guards. The Carbine is a solid Piece, Kicks like a Missouri Mule, and excellent for Feral/ Wild Hogs at close range over open sights. Ammo is available from PPU- Serbia and Grafs. Good Brass, Reloadable. Use any .323"-326" Jacketed Bullet, 170 to 200 grains. LEAD bullets up to 220 grain. Military Brass ( France or French from Former Colonies) is Krapola...Primers are Special Double Cup Berdan, Very Corrosive, and Dead. Cases can be made from .348W as well ( Head may need a bit of relieving).
