Rare Swedish Jarmann Model 1884 Naval Rifle
Description: Serial #812, 10.15 x 61R, 32 1/2” barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a handsome, 1883 dated rifle that has all matching numbers with the barrel and three bands retaining 90-92% of the original blue finish with some mild silvering and graying at the muzzle and some of the projecting edges and exposed surfaces. The matching bolt is finished armory bright with some plum-brown freckling on the handle and large top-mounted extractor spring. The blonde wood stock has scattered light handling marks and minor surface blemishes scattered about the original oil finish with a moderate bruise on the left side at the receiver, and on the right side of the vacant ramrod channel between the rear and middle bands. This is an extremely rare rifle, one of only about 1,500 made for the Swedish Navy by the Carl Gustafs arms factory after the joint Norwegian – Swedish trials. The rifle was formally adopted as the Model 1884 by Norway, but only the Swedish Navy adopted the Jarmann rifle on a limited basis. The primary differences between the Norwegian and Swedish rifles were the number of barrel bands (two on the Norwegian, three on the Swedish), and the presence of a brass plate on the underside of the forearm on Swedish examples that covers a small access port for cleaning and oiling the cartridge lifter mechanism. This is a splendid example of an extremely rare, very well made, early European repeating military rifle and would make an excellent addition to any collection.
