Mas Mdl. 36 C.R.39 * Ser. F 27050. Cal. 7.5 X 54. (Sale Pending)
Description: Inv. 5704 Mas Mdl. 36 C.R.39 * Ser. F 27050. Cal. 7.5 X 54. Awesome and unbelievably rare. This is an extremely early and original French WWII Folding Stock Paratrooper. Only the original Mas 36 Paratrooper will have the C.R. 39 stamped in the right side of the frame. The records indicate that serial numbering for the C. R.39 started with the "F" as you will note this does. Further, this does indeed have the special top tang that allows the butts latching mechanism to lock onto it. This gun’s production started in 1939 and with only around 35,000 produced. There was a small group of French Alpine troops sent to Norway that did use them during WWII. After the war the French did use them during the Indo China Wars. They then destroyed the bulk of these guns, with only several hundred original guns imported to the U.S. This particular gun retains about 80% of the original black paint finish. While there are numerous scratches and dings in the finish there is no rust or pits. The blued barrel bands, trigger guard and floor plate about 85%. The receiver bottom is stamped with a 3 and a letter that looks like an L. The wood handguards are really great showing much original finish with no nicks or dings. The folding aluminum butt stock has a factory applied grayish green finish which is correct. There are numerous surface scratches mostly on the left side. The interior of the buttstock is stamped with the number, the rear above the buttplate is stamped with a script "F" and the number 24. The rear of the frame does have the required square extension for the buttstock locking mechanism which is only found on original Paratrooper Carbines. The locking mechanism is super tight and locks and without any wobble. The automatic sling retracting mechanism is indeed fully functional and winds up the sling in a tight rapid motion leaving no hanging or slack. The rear tangent sight while unusual is also fully functional. The gun comes a with the proper cruciform bayonet which is in finer condition and is properly housed in the stock. The bore is super bright, with razor sharp rifling. There is not even a hint of graying. It is rare and it is right. This can be the center piece of your WWII arms collection or something that will turn heads at the next reenactment or range......$4950. * C.R is for the French "crosse repliable". The English translation is "folding stock".
