Italian Carcano M38 Finnish Terni carbine in 7.35 cal dated 1939

Description:
SOLD  An 81-year-old Italian Carcano Fucile Corto (short rifle) M38 bolt action carbine manufactured at R. E. Terni (Regio Esercito Terni or Royal Army Terni), at Terni, Italy in 1939. Terni is also called Fabbrica Armi Terni (FAT), the government arsenal at Terni. According to "The Model 1891 Carcano Rifle" by Giovanni Chegia & Alberto Simonelli (page 93) Terni produced 246,400 7.35mm M38 rifles between 1938 to 1940. During Finland’s 1939 winter war with the Soviet Union, Italy sent 94,500 7.35x51mm M38s to the Finns. According to "The Carcano: Italy’s Military Rifle" by Richard Hobbs (page 15), the Finns sold the 74,300 surviving rifles to Interarms in 1959. This carbine is one of the survivors. This M38’s receiver has "SA" in a box for Suomen Armeija, the Finnish Army possession stamp. The barrel has a R. E. Terni crown (crown with a cross on top) cartouche, year of manufacture "1939", "XVII" the 17th year of Mussolini’s Fascist reign, and serial number "P3875". "Cal. 7,35" (for caliber 7.35x51mm) is stamped on top of the rear sight assembly. Has a Carcano bent bolt. Per Hobbs (page 5), Carcano bolts did not have serial numbers on them, because the bolts were interchangeable. Has the "SD" in an oval bolt inspection mark. Hobbs wrote (page 15), the Finns modified the fixed sights to 150m from the standard 200m by installing a taller front sight. Hobbs said (page 15), the 7.35mm Carcanos were used by Finnish antiaircraft batteries and in hunting partisans behind the lines in Finland. Stock is original to gun, as the  butt is stamped D9062 same as the frame SN.. According to C&S, the rifle specifications are: overall length 40-1/8"; barrel length 21-1/16" with constant right-hand twist rifling of 9.45" (the first Carcano to use fixed twist rifling), rifling depth of 0.0055" and a rifled length of 18.72", 0.289" between the lands, 0.30" between the grooves; weight 7 lbs., 9 oz; 150m Finn-modified barleycorn front sight (typically 200m as noted above) with a fixed notch rear sight; 6-round clip-loaded box magazine. Has a period green leather sling. Caliber: 7.35x51mm Carcano. This fine gun comes with a it's leather sling, bayonet and scabard, hard to replace this rig.The bore is clean with good rifling and some roughness down in the grooves from wartime corrosive ammo.When buying a gun always have it examined by a competent gunsmith  before  shooting.
