Although Saginaw Steering Gear was a long time producer of automotive items, the company began plans for production of weaponry in the late 1930s. Even before Pearl Harbor, Saginaw had constructed a large plant for the purpose of manufacturing machine guns for the United States government. During the war, the company produced M1919A4 and M19198A .30 caliber, air – cooled machine guns along with many other types of war material. Saginaw received its copy being production contract in February 1943, and the first carbine was completed in April.

All Saginaw receivers with the integral spring housing variety. The receivers are also characterized by the wide rear tang though a few narrow tang receivers with "SG" code markings have been reported. The narrow tang receivers were used from the start of production until approximately serial number 3,288,000 when the wide tang came into use. Both narrow and wide tang receivers were used concurrently for a period of time, until just after serial number 3,375,000 when the white thing was used exclusively.
The Barrel.
Saginaw manufactured its own barrels.
These were marked Saginaw S.G. DIV. General Motors
The barrels were not dated or marked with the "flaming bomb" insignia and were of the swaged on gas cylinder type. Early production barrels, utilized the "short skirt" but later production barrels, where of the "long skirt" variety. Unlike some other prime contractors who made their own barrels, Saginaw was not a large supplier of barrels to other carbine manufacturers.
For some inexplicable reason Saginaw carbines seemed to be much harder to find today than the production tools would suggest. This is not the state that the weapons are rare, but many collectors have discovered that carbines made by other firms with far smaller production totals seem to turn out more often than do Saginaw carbines. Any original Saginaw carbine in collectible condition is a great find.
