1943 Early Inland M1 Carbine -- Original & Correct G.I. Bring-Back Gun!
Description: This is a very nice, honest, 99.9% correct and original World War 2 Inland M1 Carbine. The only part on this carbine that isn't factory original is the bottom rivet that holds the recoil plate on; most certainly a "field expediant" repair rigged during the war. It is most certainly a G.I. "bring-back" carbine, and it appears to be exactly the same as the day it was brought back from the war. This is a fairly early production M1 Carbine serial number 543,999, and was manufactured in the first half of 1943. The barrel date is "6-43". This gun exhibits all of the desirable early features such as a Type 1 barrel band, a Type 1 flip sight, a "high-wood" stock, a push button safety, a 2-rivet handguard, and a blued finish flat bolt. This carbine was taken down and documented on the "M1 Carbine Data Sheet" by the former owner, who was a member of the now closed Carbine Collector's Club that created the data sheet. This data sheet identifies what each and every part is in this carbine, with the "type" and markings on each part listed. This data sheet will be included with the carbine in the sale. This Inland is 100% original finish, and the parkerized parts rate approximately 93%+ with the only real finish wear on the right side of the receiver where the operating rod and bolt lug make contact with the receiver when firing or working the action. Outside of that area of the receiver, there is some very minor high-edge wear in places and a few tiny handling marks. This Inland has a great look to it overall. It was certainly issued and used during WW2, but it was well-cared for by the solider who carried it. The original blue finish on the flat bolt is still in very good condition overall. It only shows some worn and thinning finish on the locking lugs and at the rear, both of which make contact with the receiver when fired. The bore in this carbine is excellent and clean. It appears mirror-bright with strong rifling and no signs of pitting or erosion. In regards to the field-expediant repair mentioned before, it appears to be an airplane-style domed rivet inserted into the bottom of the stock in place of the factory inset nut. In an attempt to make sure it didn't loosen when fired and carried, the G.I. center-punched the edge of the screw that goes thru the recoil plate into the rivet in a number of places. There are several pictures of this provided so you can see for yourself. The previous owner as well as us decided to leave it as-is in order to preserve the originality of this carbine. The original stock is in superb condition on this Inland and is free from any cracks or repairs. It is a correct "high-wood" model with the large Ordnance Wheel cartouche on the right side of the butt, as well as the sling-well marked "IO". The left side of the large Ordnance wheel cartouche is nice and deep and visible but appears to have been partially stuck on the curve of the stock with the right side very faint and/or worn. The "IO" is deep, clean, and crisp in the slingwell. The pistol grip is stamped with a circle "P" which is correct for an early production Inland factory inspection stamp. Below the circle "P" on the bottom of the pistol grip the initials "A.W.T" are carved into the wood. These are most likely the soldier's initials that was originally issued this carbine. This Inland comes with an original WW2sling and oiler, and an original WW2 G.I. contract 15-rd magazine marked "AI" with a line above and below the letters. If you have been looking for a really nice M1 Carbine for your collection that is all-original and has some character, this Inland would be an excellent choice. It is in great shape overall, but shows that it was actually carried and used in World War 2. With proper precautions and care it could even be enjoyed at the firing range without harming it's value. It isn' too often we get carbines like this.
