1935 Mauser M98 Chilean Carabineros All matching
Description: SOLD PENDING PAYMENT...TAKING BACK UP OFFERS MAUSER Banner MODELO 1935 Chilean Carbine In 1935, Mauser Oberndorf was contracted by the government of Chile to build 10,000 new Carbines for the Carabineros de Chile, a military style investigative police force under the Ministry of the Interior. The Carabineros covered much of the rugged and remote countryside of Chile on horseback, so the size and side mounted sling of these Carbines was handy. The crossed rifle logo of the Carabineros is crisply stamped under CHILE on the receiver ring’s crest above the slogan ORDEN Y PATRIA which translates to Honor and Homeland. Below this is stamped MODELO 1935. Clear and crisply stamped Crown B (Beschuss-fired), Crown G (geschoss-projectile), Crown N (nitrocellulose) and Crown U (untersuchung-examination) are on the right side of the receiver ring. Serie C.Ch.No 61 is stamped on the left side of the receiver ring followed by MAUSER-WERKE A. G. OBERNDORF A/N on the receiver body. Chile’s MODELO 1935 Carbine in 7 x 57mm (7mm Mauser), based on the Mauser Model 1898 action, is unique and was manufactured in Germany when the quality was at its finest. It is labeled as a Carbine but the 21.5” (545 mm) barrel is actually closer to the 24” (610 mm) barrel of the Short Rifle than the 17.7” (450 mm) barrel of the Carbine. Chile turned to MAUSER-WERKE A.G. OBERNDORF A/N for the manufacture of these Carbines. They carry the MAUSER banner logo stamped on the rear bridge of the receiver as was used during the 1930’s before WWII. This Carbine is in Very Good condition, clean with no visible rust or pitting. It has well defined, crisp markings, inspection marks and cartouches. It is in original and correct military configuration, with all matching numbers including the receiver, barrel, all parts of the bolt, magazine floor plate, trigger, triggerguard, barrel bands, butt plate, handguard and stock. The original bluing is bright and dark with some edge wear and thinning on the exposed forward portion of the barrel, floor plate, triggerguard and barrel bands which exhibit some pleasing smooth grayish patina with a couple of tiny freckles on top of the barrel between the bands. It has a polished bent bolt assembly in the white as originally manufactured and the butt plate, also in the white, has some aging spots. This rifle seems to have been carried more than it was fired as the bolt face is clean, with no ring around the firing pin hole. The action is crisp and the bore is bright and smooth with very good rifling. The original German walnut stock with pistol grip and nice grain pattern has a clear, crisply stamped encircled Chilean Crest cartouche above a boxed 1935 above an encircled CI/AE acceptance mark. It has a quick disconnect sling swivel and saddle ring on the left side that are permanently fixed in place. It shows the usual dents, scuffs, scratches, bruises and handling marks from being carried on a cavalry saddle, but no cracks, gouges, chips or refurbishment. Included is an original MAUSER leather sling which is in very good supple condition with good stitching and cross hatching and some expected wear and minor buckle creases. This is a very nice specimen of a very scarce 21.5” Carbine-Short Rifle which makes it very desirable with it being all original and matching, in original military configuration. It would make a fine addition to any collection. Sourced from the collection of a well known local historian and collector, this weapon has been well maintained and cared for. ****WE ARE ALWAYS BUYING AND ARE VERY EXPERIENCED IN ESTATE SALES TOO.
