War of 1812 Stephen Jenks Musket Dated 1812
Description: This is a Model 1808 Stephen Jenks & Son Contract Musket originally produced in flint lock and later converted post-War of 1812 to percussion by fitting the barrel with a new percussion drum, cone and hammer. On 10/26/2008 Stephen and George Jenks (father and son) of Providence, RI received a contract for 4,000 muskets. Through March 14, 1814 Jenks delivered 3,925 muskets, including 250 muskets delivered directly to Rhode Island. This is an early War of 1812 dated example with the date '1812' clearly stamped on the tail of the lock plate under 'JENKS,s' and 'RI'. The lock plate is also stamped forward of the hammer with an eagle over U.S. in an oval panel. The only marking on the barrel is a small 'p' stamped at the breech. This is probably a second re-proof of the barrel done at the time of the percussion conversion. With the absence of any markings on the barrel and stock indicating acceptance by the federal government, this may be one of the 250 muskets that were delivered directly to Rhode Island. The overall condition of this early War of 1812 weapon is exceptional, all of the iron parts are smooth clean steel with a slight natural light age patina over top. The lock is in great shape with like new markings and mechanics. The percussion drum and nipple are in very fine condition as well. The .69 caliber smooth bore appears unfired, bright and shiny. The gun retains its original sling swivels. full length ramrod and bayonet stud. All the screws are in fine shape. The full length dark oil finished American black walnut stock is also in superb condition for a War of 1812 weapon, it shows no chips, cracks, or splinters and retains all of its original oil finish. This gun shows no signs of cleaning or polishing and has not been altered or disturbed in any way. War of 1812 produced muskets in this very fine condition are very scarce.
