Victoria Carbine Second Model Calvary Musket
Description:
A most colorful Victorian era 19th century calvary musket with .79 cal smoothbore, 26” barrel with an oxidized bore. The metal surfaces have a brown patina with undertones of gunmetal gray, scattered oxidation, and a few light handling marks. The brass fittings show a dark ochre patina and a few light handling marks. The smooth walnut stock is in very good condition as lightly cleaned with a short tight crack behind the lockplate, an about 8” thin crack on the right side of the forend just below the woodline, and a light handling mark or two; the brass buttplate appears to have been glued to the stock at the heel. The stock appears unmarked and features a sling bar and ring mounted to the lock screws. The lockplate is marked “TOWER” ahead of the hammer with a clear crown at the rear, and the barrel is marked with three British proofs along the left side and “578” stamped atop the barrel. The musket is sighted with a post front sight, and a slot for a rear sight located next to the hammer remains vacant, and never had a dovetail as these were fired from the hip a calvaryman . The lock remains strong and appears to function well mechanically. When buying a gun always have it examined by a competent gunsmith before shooting.
