Austrian Percussion Cavalry Carbine
Description:
Serial #HD18451, .71 Caliber, 14 1/2" rifled barrel with a fair bore that has dark pitting along its length. This is a neat little carbine that has a shallow cone and nipple conversion, and has moderate overall pitting throughout, and has been cleaned to bright gray at some point. There is a small, partially visible Hapsburg double eagle on the rear portion of the lock plate, but the lock date is no longer visible. The walnut stock has a thick, added varnish that has flaked off in spots, leaving about 50-60% coverage on the wood. There are numerous small handling marks and blemishes evenly distributed throughout the wood as well. The action is still tight and functions flawlessly. Many of these carbines were imported during the Civil War after undergoing percussion conversion at Liege with many of them going to the western command of Gen. John Fremont. This is a fine looking example of a secondary Civil War carbine, and would make a great addition to a collection. Antique
