Antique GERMAN ERFURT Model 1888/05 Bolt Action 7.92mm Cal. MILITARY Rifle
Modified Gewehr 88/Model 1888 COMMISSION RIFLE!
Description: Antique GERMAN ERFURT Model 1888/05 Bolt Action 7.92mm Cal. MILITARY Rifle Modified Gewehr 88/Model 1888 COMMISSION RIFLE! Here we present an antique German Erfurt Model 1888/05, also referred to as the Gewehr 88 or the Model 88 Commission Rifle, made circa 1891 at the Erfurt Arsenal in Erfurt, Germany with a production run between 1888 and 1899. The Gewehr 88 was a late 19th-century German bolt action rifle, adopted in 1888. The invention of smokeless powder in the late 19th century immediately rendered all of the large-bore black powder rifles then in use obsolete. To keep pace with the French, who had adopted smokeless powder "small bore" ammunition for their Lebel Model 1886 rifle, the Germans adopted the Gewehr 88 using its own new M/88 cartridge, which was also designed by the German Rifle Commission. The rifle was one of many weapons in the arms race between the Germanic states and France, and with Europe in general. There were also two carbine versions, the Karabiner 88 for mounted troops and the Gewehr 91 for artillery. Starting and continuing from 1905 on, these rifles were also converted to use the Gewehr 98 type stripper clip by adding stripper clip guides to the top rear of the receiver and altering the magazine, thus becoming Gewehr 88/05 rifles. The modified Gewehr 88s went on to serve in World War I to a limited degree. Unlike many German service rifles before and after, it was not developed by Mauser, but rather the arms commission, and Mauser was one of the few major arms manufacturers in Germany that did not produce Gewehr 88s. This example has been around the world, and it shows! Strong action. The bore is in nice shape with good rifling. Dark, solid stock with an old split on the left side just under the rear sight. “1890” is dated barrel. Proof markings stamped into the right buttstock. Numbers match (the bolt was struck of the original number long ago and stamped on the bolt knob to match). An early example of the Mauser rifle that would have seen action through at least the Great War. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 29 inches. Caliber: 7.92x57mm Mauser Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $1245 #210741 SOLD Antique: Yes |
