The 1833 Hall Carbine was the first U.S. military percussion firearm and the first U.S. military breechloader. 7,163 58 and 52 caliber Model 1833 carbines were manufactured by Simeon North of Middletown, CT, circa 1834 to 1839. Of these, 6,135 52 caliber carbines were manufactured between 1836 and 1839. They were issued to the 2nd U.S. Dragoons who were fighting the Seminole wars in Florida. This carbine's 26 3/16"" round 52 caliber smooth bore barrel has a fine bore. The barrel is bright with scattered very light roughness. It is inspected NWP at the left side of the breech. The breech block is marked U.S over S.NORTH over MIDLtn over CONN over 1839. All the metal is bright with scattered very minor surface freckling. The sling ring is present. The implement door is cracked at the forward attachment screw. The stock is very good with the usual chips at the rear of the implement door, an old added finish coat, a good cartouche on the left side at the receiver, and light to moderate issue wear. The action functions correctly. The Model 1833 was also the first U.S. arm to field an integral sliding rod bayonet. This carbine has the correct triangular rod bayonet. The Model 1833 is hard to find in decent condition. This one fits the bill.
