Desirable Mannlicher Model 1901 Semi-Automatic Pistol Carbine Serial Number 672
Description: This is a very scarce and hence extremely rare example of an early semi-automatic Mannlicher pistol-carbine designed by Ferdinand Ritter von Mannlicher of Austria professionally restored to a fine condition that frankly many peers have argued over whether it was still in the original state. The Mannlicher carbine is lightweight and very compact semi-automatic carbine that uses a short recoil, blow-back type action with a concealed internal hammer. It has a reciprocating cocking lever mounted on the right side of the frame that doubles as a means to both cock the hammer and as a hammer position indicator. It is loaded via stripper clips through the top of the action and has a detachable double-stack magazine assembly mounted in front of the trigger guard. There have been a few that have come up for sale with out the magazines, but this one has it all!! It has an integral blade front sight/front barrel band with a middle barrel band with a sling loop on the left side with a corresponding sling slot through the rear section of the buttstock. Typically these had either a tangent rear sight mounted on the rear of the barrel or on top of the receiver; however, interestingly, this rare example is fitted with an unmarked, two-leaf folding commercial style rear sight that is dovetailed into the top of the receiver like a sporting rifle. It is rumored that the configurations showed some minor differences in features like the strap locations for a sling, we are told that this was due to the original intent, to eventually sell to the military market. The left side of the receiver, magazine base plate, front nose cap and right side of the trigger are all correctly numbered "672" with the original roll correct stamp. It is fitted with a small round forearm that encompasses the complete outside of the barrel and a pistol grip style walnut stock with a stamped steel buttplate. From time to time, we will come across some real beauties but this old gal is what we all dream about having in our collection. Condition: Very fine with in our opinion an older professionally restoration with 98% of a beautiful charcoal blued type finish, nice sharp edges and flats, and a hint of wear on the edges. The complete bolt assembly, trigger, takedown and cocking levers and action cross pins are all in the white in correct order. The stock and forend are both in very fine condition with 85% of their varnish finish overall showing minor/light handling marks on the sides in some areas with a darkening of the varnish at the rear of the forend and around the edges of the buttplate. Mechanically functions, although return spring on barrel extension is weak and interrupts hammer drop.
