** SOLD ** Civil War Era Maynard Carbine Chambered in .50 Caliber
Description: Here we have a Maynard Carbine chambered in .50 caliber. The Maynard carbine was a breech-loaded carbine used by cavalry in the American Civil War. In United States service it was distributed to the 9th Pennsylvania and 1st Wisconsin cavalry regiments, United States Marines aboard the USS Saratoga and the United States Revenue Cutter Service. About 3,000 Maynard carbines were in Confederate hands during the war; 5,000 in .35 caliber were purchased by Florida, 650 in .50 by Georgia, and 325 in .50 and 300 in .35 by Mississippi. Around 800 were purchased by militias in South Carolina and Louisiana. The Maynard had a good reputation for long-range accuracy, and Confederate sharpshooters made extensive use of it, especially during the Siege of Charleston. This particular example is a second model made between 1860-1865 and chambered in .50 caliber. Many of these rifles were sold to the civilian market but this one has the proper government inspector's mark on the left side of the stock. The metal has lost most of it's original finish and has worn to a handsome warm grey patina. The wood is in very good condition with one crack just to the right of the top tang but no wood is missing. The 20 inch barrel has an amazingly clean and bright bore and some rifling still exists. A blade front and yardage incremented three blade rear sight make up the sighting system. The blades are marked "1", "3" and "5". This is a historical rifle that would make an excellent addition to a collection of Civil War militaria or a great start to a new collection. If this gun could talk it would likely have some incredible stories that should be documented in the history books.
