"Maynard Tape Primer Conversion U.S. Musket by Nippes (AL7010)
Description: "In 1848 and 1849 D.S. Nippes altered or built as new 2,000 U.S. Model 1840 muskets to percussion using the tape priming system designed by Dr. Edward Maynard. The majority, like this one, were alterations of Nippes flintlock Model 1840 flintlock muskets. This alteration could use either the Maynard tape primer (like a roll of cap gun caps) or a standard percussion cap. This musket's 42"" round 69 caliber smooth bore barrel has a fine bore. The barrel is marked at the breech U.S. over NWP over a nicely impressed circle P. The barrel tang is dated 1845. All the metal has a smooth bright-gray patina. The lock is marked MILL over CREEK over PA over 1842 at the tail. The Maynard tape mechanism is marked EDWARD MAYNARD over PATENTEE over 1845. The swivels and ramrod are present. The stock is excellent with no cracks or chips and two strong cartouches and the stocker's initials on the left flat. The action and the tape primer mechanism function properly. This fine musket comes with a fine US Model 1835-40 bayonet that fits properly. This top condition Nippes-Maynard musket is fit for the finest collection.
