This is a Custom Mauser 98. Likely a intermediate VI. (A #9 Blackburn size for bottom metal as I have measured that already.) I bought for myself as a mountain rifle thinking a Model 51L JC Higgins. The rifle which I really like has a barrel/sight that doubles as a recoil lug allowing the rifle to be 6 lbs 10 oz!! Real smart that.... BUT, the model 51L did not HAVE this Mauser action? And as I learned not likely did the Mauser actions used on the Model 50 either...? And in no way did they come with this wood and checkering!! Please, I make rifles. So you have a $1,500 to $3,000. wood blank, you stock and checker that, and you are at what, $6,000.00? That's My cost. So my best guess is, the gun was made in the 60's. No makers name; just JC Higgins data on the barrel. Serial number not on the Action like Higgins or Mauser but the right side of the barrel. Higgins did not do that. So we could identify as mine? A Joseph Brazier, Ltd or Karl Lippard Designs? Huuum, interesting? I have changed the Shroud from Mauser to a 3 position side safety that I can use; installed a Timney trigger; BUT, if my name I would really have to redo the gun. Take the action down to bare metal for fine polish. Maybe replace the bottom metal too? Now we are out of its saleability. Shoot it like it is Karl. It's ready. Or sell it to someone who shoots right handed instead of buying a salt wood Browning?? Then for me, find a PO Ackley left handed rifle in 06. Of course I love these iron sights on this one!!! It has scope rings. Got to have that barrel on this one? Huuum, maybe you won't buy this gun. I can carry it while I look for an Ackley....Sounds like a plan. And I do love this one. At 79 years old now, I may not find a left hand Ackley.
Not really any handloing marks. Does not look on the bolt face to have been shot much but carried. Some historic slight rust freckling if you look for it. A Mauser buttplate. It looks like you have owned it, not bought last week. Something you can lie about that cost you $12,000.00 from me.
