1917 Dated WORLD WAR I MAUSER 8mm GEW 98 IMPERIAL GERMAN Military Rifle C&R Manufactured by MAUSER in OBERNDORF, GERMANY
Description: 1917 Dated WORLD WAR I MAUSER 8mm GEW 98 IMPERIAL GERMAN Military Rifle C&R Manufactured by MAUSER in OBERNDORF, GERMANY Here we present a C&R Mauser Gewehr 98 German Military Rifle, made circa 1917 in Oberndorf, Germany. The Gewehr 98 was introduced in 1898 and was the standard German military rifle from 1898 to 1935. The Gewehr 98 replaced the earlier Gewehr 1888 as the main German service rifle. The 98 featured a bolt action receiver and internal 5-round magazine fed by stripper clips. The 29” rifled barrel is chambered for the 8mm Mauser cartridge (7.92 x 57mm) using a spitzer bullet, which was a modification from the M/88 cartridge with a slightly smaller round nose bullet. The chambering was non-interchangeable, so rifles made for the new round were stamped with an “S” on the barrel behind the rear sight. The Gewher 98 originally had a walnut full stock, but walnut shortages in 1917 necessitated the use of beech wood. This example is clearly stamped WAFFENFABRIK/MAUSER A-G/OBERNDORF A/N/1917 on the top of the receiver and features the beech wood stock. The Gewehr 98 saw action as the primary infantry service rifle in World War I, as well as the Chinese Boxer rebellion and the Herero Wars in the preceding years. As with all contemporary bolt-action rifles, it was a powerful and accurate rifle with long range that was poorly suited for the close quarter fighting of trench warfare. The considerable length of the rifle and the minimum sight setting of 400 meters (far in excess of the typical range in trench battles) were particular handicaps. Its successor, the Karabiner 98k, would go on to be the standard rifle of the German infantry during World War II. Some Gewehr 98s also saw service in World War II, though many of these older rifles were converted to either 98b or 98k specifications. The overall condition is very good. Import marking and markings on the bolt indicate this rifle was eventually sold to Turkey and used in their military. Gray patina throughout. The action is excellent. The bore is in very good condition with strong rifling. The stock shows use and remains solid. Numbers match on the barrel, receiver, magazine assembly and bottom metal, rear sight parts, bolt latch, and barrel bands. The bolt has Turkish markings and the number on the butt plate is a possible match but hard to read. Own the original! This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic. Barrel is 22-1/2 inches.
