“byf”/44” Code K98 GERMAN 3rd Reich Rifle Used by ZIONIST ISRAEL Post-War C&R Converted by Israel to 7.62x51 NATO
Description: “byf”/44” Code K98 GERMAN 3rd Reich Rifle Used by ZIONIST ISRAEL Post-War C&R Converted by Israel to 7.62x51 NATO Here we present a C&R Third Reich German Mauser Oberndorf “byf” Code “44” Model K98 Rifle manufactured circa 1944. It was subsequently acquired by the Jewish government in Israel in the post-war period during their early statehood. It was used hard and eventually rechambered to 7.62x51 NATO, which is why the stock and receiver are both marked this way. This is an example of a late World War II K98 rifle that was manufactured at the Mauser factory in Oberndorf. Oberndorf has a long history of producing military small arms. Founded in 1811 by King Frederich the First of Wuerttemberg as an arsenal to produce muskets for his army, the facility was typical of many factories that sprang up during the Industrial Revolution. Mauser acquired the plant in 1871 and was the First Mauser Plant acquired which was located in Oberndorf, Germany. In 1898 the German Army purchased a Mauser design, the Model 98, which incorporated improvements introduced in earlier models. The weapon was originally chambered for the Patrone 88 and officially entered German service as the Gew. 98 on April 5, 1898. This remains by far the most successful of the Mauser designs, helped by the onset of two world wars that demanded vast numbers of rifles. At the start of World War II, the Führer demanded that the factory produce 70,000 Mauser rifles a month, and it delivered them with the help of 5,000 forced laborers from across Europe. The overall condition is fair to good. Dark, worn patina. Pitting along and under the wood. The action is strong. The bore is bright with strong rifling. The stock shows heavy use and some refinishing. Numbers are mixed. This is an interesting example of a rifle that was used by the Germans during WW2 and then was put to use by the Jews creating the modern state of Israel—an unusual turn of events! Own the original!
