J.P Sauer Mauser 98 Sporter.
30-06 Owned by US Rep. Richard Pillsbury Gale
SALE PENDING
Description:
This fine JP Sauer pre-war sporter is built on the Mauser 98 action and is chambered in 30-06. It is marked J.P. Sauer & Son, Suhl Prussia". The chambering and the Prussia marking would suggest that this rifle was built for the US market. If I recall, my previous research placed maufacture at 1910-1911. The Sauer Serial number is 182681. It is an Oberndorf sporter action and the Oberndorf serial number is 44597. All f the numbers on the rifle components match. The rifle is in original finish including the color case hardened bolt. The rifle was once owned by Richard Pillsbury Gale. And it is engraved with his name on the stock sheild. Richard P. Gale was a Minnesota state Rep. from 1939-1940 and a US Rep. from 1941-1945. He was also a second generation member of the Millsbury Bakery family. Seen here is a photo of Mr. Gale with Eleanor Roosevelt. Mr. Gale was in his later life a collector of Japanese art and prints. His Art collection was left to the University of Minnesota and is documented in the two volume "Gale Catalog". I have a copy of this two volume book set that would be included with the rifle. Mr. Gale was not the original purchaser of the rifle as the manufacutre date would have been when he was only 10-11 years old. He was likely the second owner of the rifle and kept it for his whole life. The rifle was sold off by his grandson about 10-12 years ago. The overall condition of the rifle is Very good and above average condition for a sporter of this age. The rifle had at one tim ebeen fitted with a Lyman 35 peep sight. When I received the rifle the sight was missing, but from the inletting in the wood, I could tell that was the style of sight that was on it. I put a Lyman 35 back onto it and made the front sight to work with the peep. It is a great shooting rifle and is very accurate. see here a photo of a pair of doe taken opening day a few years ago. The Leather covered Silvers pad is a newer replacement that I installed. It is what was on the rifle, but it had become very hard and deteriorated. I thought it best to replace it. Please contact me with any questions or for more photos. I have a lot of photos of this rifle, also many of it disassembled showing all of the internals and inside of the stock. Ship to FFL or C&R. Payment by Check or MO.
