Mauser Model 66, .308 Winchester
Description: Good shooters/hunters, less than a week left on this listing...When it expires, that will be that. As the great truism goes, "they don't make them like this anymore." Will I entertain a serious, reasonable offer...or a trade for your Randall #1 carried by granddad over the Ludendorff Bridge in 1945? Perhaps...perhaps... ------------------------ I offer a great hunting rifle deal...I've had this Mauser 66S for many years... Never fired it until a couple of days ago. I shot it at a hanging metal plate 5" X 18" at 200 yards. Front sight was as large as the plate at 200, but I hit it every time. But Safe Queen it has been. It is in superlative condition. Now if you are not familiar with the Mauser 66S, pls do not equate it with the Nazi junque 98s of WWII that are still banging around the deer woods while Dueling Banjos can he heard... This Mauser 66S in .308 has a beautifully figured piece of walnut with checkering that is close to perfect. It was a safe queen when I got it and stayed one. The previous owner had the barrel glass bedded which caused a slight gap between the receiver in the rear and the stock. My plan had been to unglass bed via dremel tool to correct that, as previous Model 66s that I have owned shot well enough as configured by the factory. Never got around to that. The previous owner also had a strange one piece wedge piece scope base in the front that I removed. Both scope rings would fit on this base on the above scope mounting area, with a single barrel point of contact…that I thought had to compromise accuracy. When the new owner decides on his/her scope mounting system, that wedge area vacancy behind the rear sight will be invisible…or a metal wedge can be procured to be placed back in that area, or the wedge input area simply used as the front mount area. Screw holes for the rear scope mount have been factory prepared. These are the issues and IMHO are pretty minor. You can see the Zeiss scope that I had been thinking of putting on it. I did find that New England Gun can fit scope mounts for me, but are pricey. So if it doesn't sell by March 10th when this listing expires, I have that option, as well as to get serious scouring the internet for suitable scope mounts. The scope pic is for demo only...What a large scope would look like on the rifle. It does not come with the rifle. The rifle's recoil pad was professionally replaced, and if you are familiar with this model, you will understand that the originals cracked and got hard quickly. The bore is excellent. I do not believe this rifle has ever seen the field...and has likely only seen a range infrequently...as I pecked above, once with me. Those minor issues above are why I have priced this rifle at hundreds below other Mauser 66s you will find. If you want more pics of a specific area, email me. Of course, I'll need an FFL unless you are a Missouri resident and can pick it up in the Kansas City area. PLS Do Not Call...EMAIL me, or leave me your phone number via email ...or we can correspond via emails. We'll discuss shipping cost depending on where and how it is going. Any other questions or photos wanted, again, send me an email. BONUS? I have another bolt that will fit it...I will include it for the $1200. What would such a bolt cost if you could locate one? Minimum of $300... See photo. If you don't want it, sell it and get the rifle cost down a goodly bit! It was from my stolen Mauser 66 in .243. The burglar was insufficiently sophisticated to know that finding another bolt for a 66 would be an expensive, elusive proposition. By the way, with some earnest searching, you can find other barrels that can be easily interchanged with this Mauser 66... For example, with the .308, a .243 barrel is easily interchanged, also 5.6x57mm, 6.5x57mm, 270 Winchester, 7x64mm Brenneke, 30/06, 9.3x62mm . The rifle was way ahead of its time, but with the pecularities of the bolt, made finding and mounting a correct scope mount a challenge. Check out revivaler/the-mauser-66 for some detailed info. It became far too expensive to manufacture... At my price, you can do the mounts right and still be hundreds under what the Fjestad bible indicates the rifle is worth, which to my recall, approaches $2000. Rob Kornacki, US Army (Ret) SOLD |
